by Fred Showker

Fred Showker's Creative tidbits

Creative tidbits is a column in DTG Magazine featuring creative inspiration I have a pile of freebies, and just haven't gotten around to including them -- but I'll start including some of them now. Also, an important item for web designers in this issue -- the typography thing between web sites and mobile sites is really a nightmare. Otherwise it's all fun and all good this issue so have a good time!

Typography is impossible

Fred Showker's Creative Tidbits

This is a very good article by Marcin Wichary, Designer and typographer at Medium - ... it's important to anyone who writes code for the web -- the practical guide to why laying out type never quite does what you want
You’re a front-end engineer... but at this very moment, you’re also a typesetter. It’s good work. Satisfying work. (As of a few decades ago, you don’t even have to worry much about lead poisoning.) There’s something mathematically, geometrically comforting and peaceful about filling boxes. Computers are good at rectangles. This should be easy. But you’re about to discover, or perhaps already discovered, that this is no smooth sailing. Setting type can be tricky. Type lets you get close, but it never quite does what you want it to do.
